How Big Is the GTA 6 Map?

Rockstar has never published a square-mileage figure for any GTA map, and GTA 6 is no exception. What is confirmed is the shape of the thing: GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, with Vice City as its largest urban centre plus keys, wetlands, farmland and several smaller towns. That structure alone tells you it is the biggest map in series history — the useful question is how much of that size is dense, playable space rather than filler.

What Rockstar has actually confirmed

Confirmed: GTA 6 covers the state of Leonida, not a single city. Confirmed locations include Vice City, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Grassrivers, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Trailer footage shows dense beachfront urban blocks, an interstate corridor, sawgrass wetland traversed by airboat, and rural swamp settlements.

Not confirmed: any measurement. Every square-mile number circulating online is either scaled off trailer geometry by fans or carried over from 2022 leak footage of an unfinished build. Treat all of them, including the comparisons below, as estimates.

The comparison that actually matters

For reference, GTA V's map is commonly measured at roughly 49 square miles, of which Los Santos proper is a small fraction; Red Dead Redemption 2 sits near 29 square miles of much denser terrain. Fan estimates for Leonida cluster around 1.5-2x GTA V, which would put it somewhere in the 70-100 square mile range.

Raw area is a poor proxy for how big a map feels, though. GTA V spends a lot of its size on empty desert and mountain. Leonida's confirmed geography is water-heavy and settlement-dotted, which means more coastline, more interiors, and more reason to travel by boat or air. A map that is 1.5x larger but 3x denser plays as far bigger than the number suggests.

  • GTA V: ~49 sq mi, one major city plus desert and mountain
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: ~29 sq mi, very high terrain density
  • GTA 6 (estimated): ~70-100 sq mi, one major city plus keys, wetlands and multiple towns
  • Real Florida, for scale: ~65,000 sq mi — Leonida is a compressed caricature, not a replica

Is Vice City bigger than Los Santos?

Almost certainly yes, and by a wide margin. Trailer footage shows multi-block beachfront districts, a downtown high-rise core, port and industrial zones, and suburban sprawl inland. Los Santos was built for a 2013 console generation with hard streaming limits; Vice City is built for hardware with SSD streaming and hardware decompression, which mainly buys vertical detail and interior access rather than flat area.

Interiors are the quiet upgrade to watch. If a meaningful share of storefronts, apartments and businesses are enterable, the effective size of the city multiplies without the map outline changing at all.

How long does it take to cross?

Using GTA V as the baseline — roughly 8-10 minutes to drive corner to corner on the freeway — a 1.5-2x map with a genuine interstate corridor puts a full north-south drive somewhere in the 12-20 minute range. Water and air travel matter more than in any previous GTA: the keys and wetlands are built for boats and airboats, and several confirmed areas look designed to be reached that way first.

Will the map grow after launch?

Rockstar's pattern says yes. GTA Online repeatedly expanded Los Santos with new interiors, islands and reworked zones over a decade. Leonida is a state-scale canvas with obvious room for added towns and islands, and the online component is built to be supported for years. Expect the launch map to be the floor, not the ceiling.

Frequently asked

How big is the GTA 6 map in square miles?+

Rockstar has not published a figure. Fan estimates based on trailer footage put Leonida at roughly 70-100 square miles, or about 1.5-2x the size of GTA V's map. No official measurement exists.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?+

Yes. GTA 6 covers the whole state of Leonida rather than one city and its outskirts, with Vice City, the Leonida Keys, wetlands and several separate towns confirmed in official footage.

Is the GTA 6 map based on real Florida?+

It is a caricature, not a recreation. Vice City stands in for Miami, the Leonida Keys for the Florida Keys, and the wetland region for the Everglades, all heavily compressed and reinterpreted.

How long does it take to drive across the GTA 6 map?+

Unconfirmed. Scaling from GTA V's 8-10 minute corner-to-corner freeway drive, a full crossing of Leonida likely takes 12-20 minutes by road, with boats and aircraft used heavily for the keys and wetlands.

Will the GTA 6 map get bigger after launch?+

Very likely. Rockstar expanded GTA Online's map with new interiors and islands for a decade, and Leonida's state-scale layout leaves obvious room for post-launch additions.
